Intensive Teams

At All About Dance!, we take great pride in the accomplishments of our dance competition teams. To ensure that each of our competition team members also takes pride in his or her involvement with and successes in the competition experience, our competition program is characterized by our goals for the All About Dance! by Kristen Dance Competition Team.

An important objective of each of our competition team instructors is to create a positive learning environment with high, yet not excessive, expectations that challenge team members to continually strive for his or her personal best. We place an emphasis on commitment, hard work, camaraderie among team members, prompt and regular attendance, and positive representation of our studio - thus giving our competition member a "taste" of the professional dance world and its similar expectations.

In doing so, we hope to provide our competition teams with the discipline and heart to perform successfully at regional and national competitions. While we hope that our competition teams are able to walk away from each regional and national competition pleased with the outcome of their performances, we do not measure success in the tangible form of trophies, medals, or awards. Rather, we look at the intangible results of the competition experience, which we feel are among the highest rewards. Such results are the ultimate goal of dance competition program - the sense of accomplishment from a season of hard work and improvement, the formation of long-lasting friendships and a "together-we-can" attitude, the ability to gain further performance experience, and the heightened desire to continue to improve as an individual and as a team.

Intensive Team FAQs

  1. How can my child become a part of the intensive team?
There are a variety of opportunities for students to become part of the intensive program. Students who will be six years or younger as of May 1st of the competition season may receive a letter from an instructor inviting them to participate in the intensive team program. Students who will be seven years or older as of May 1st of the competition season will have the opportunity to participate in an audition process for team placement.

  2. What classes does my child have to take if they are a part of the intensive program?
Intensive students are required to take their competition class and a core class that corresponds with their competition subject. In addition, those students who are in the seven years or older age range are required to take ballet and jumps, leaps and turns. For example, if your child was eight years old and a member of a jazz competition team, they would be required to take the following classes: their weekly competition class, a jazz class, a ballet class and jumps, leaps, and turns.

  3. How many times do they compete?
Generally, there are three to four competitions within a season. One of these competitions is usually also a convention in which students have the opportunity to take class from some of the best in the “biz”. Attending a national competition occurs on alternating years and would be considered the fourth competition for that particular year.

  4. What styles of dance can my child compete in?
Students have the opportunity to be invited, or audition for, jazz or tap competition teams. In addition, students usually have the opportunity to be a part of a hip hop, lyrical or production competition team. These teams are dependent upon the number of students who participate.

  5. Which group will my child be a part of?
Students audition within a mini, junior or senior age group. Teams will be formed based on the results of the auditions.

  6. Who judges the auditions?
Each year, distinguished dancers are asked to judge our competition auditions to give a fresh perspective on the students’ abilities.

  7. How are the teams made?
Following auditions, teams are created based solely on the numerical scores of the auditions.

  8. How are scores determined during auditions?
  9. Students are judged based on a variety of factors including technique and performance. Numerical scores are given for each category; however students will receive only their judge’s comments at the close of the audition process.
